hello! Food, food, food, Burma....mmmmm... so good! Did you now the yellow tofu is split yellow peas and a Shan speciality? I read "Moon Princess" by the woman who's Dad was the last "Saopha" (Lord of the Sky) around Inle Lake, around 1950 I think, post WW2 anyway. Naturally, I have taken to calling Umporn Lord of the Sky, only a little bit sarcastically but lovingly. Maybe Li (or you) could be "Moon Princess"? It has a certain poetic and romantic ring. I think we should have street food in Oz. It's a bit of a hobby horse of mine... provides employment for the talented but not so wealthy enterprising sorts, usually delicious, seasonal produce and diverse. Will probably never happen until we get a lot more Asian faces in Govt. I found all the kids working a bit hard to take as you also realized they were probably not in school. They all seem jolly enough, but I knew it is poverty driven. I have been in touch with your sis. Very interesting and rewarding. Umporn asked me to ask you your intended landing spot route once you hit Oz? Not sure if he wants to cheer you on from the road side (doubt it given his schedule) or mere curiosity. It's Mardi Gras here. we've been to an excellent, hilarious and very talent driven cabarat this week as well as a time-based queer performance by 5 separate artists in the cavernous, dark space at Carriageworks with music by Semore Butt and Paul Mac. also, food news wise, a tiny, Japanese local Darlo Sake and Japanese finger food joint called "Nom". I got a free meal (from our table) by knowing it is slang for "vagina" in Japanese as well as meaning delicious food! It's amazingly cheap yet fabulous and delicious, totally surprisingly so given we are all used to hemoraging (can't spell) money for Japanese food and sake. Will give you the deets upon your return if you are interested. Meanwhile, on, on... rolling along.... enjoy yourselves and love to Li. Ngaire xxx
