Glad to hear you are still @ FHS.

I would highly recommend London-Istanbul for cycling. There has been great variety between the different countries and we have had great experiences overall. I assume you plan to undertake the trip during the Summer holidays? If so, you probably wouldn’t need half the stuff we are carrying and even in rural Romania, would easily make it between Pensions/hotels. We have met quite a few solo male tourers en-route (some credit card touring and some with a lightweight tent). The tourist infrastructure in Romania is improving and with a bit of research and planning I’m sure you will be OK. I can’t help much on the weather side of things, but then again that is no different from London really.

We arrived in Istanbul yesterday after some ‘exhilarating’ riding in traffic…it’s famous for it. I would be happy to advise of routes etc in the future.

I am planning to cycle (alone) from London to Istanbul next year. Michael Hill told me about Bamboo Odyssey and am most impressed, but some of your comments about wetness, lack of accommodation and so on make me nervous; thanks for the lovely writing and pictures. GAxFHS

Tis true in my experience of rural men and BIG dogs behind the former Iron Curtain…. neither pleasant, approachable or helpful. I got it cycling for only a day, got lost though, in Estonia, a long way North of where you are, but left me with the same feeling. Just don’t ask to marry any of their women, blood feuds will ensue, and you haven’t got room in the panniers for a bazooka, I would imagine. I am full of admiration for you both. Umporn says you write like female Bruce Chatwin…I just read him yr blog. Best of luck with the inter-cultural negociations. xxx
